Domain Authority is a metric that can be used to help measure the perceived authority of a website.
It is a numerical value between 1 and 100 and is calculated on a logarithmic scale. It is easier to increase your rank from 1 to 2 than it is to increase from 50 to 51. Domain Authority, or DA, is heavily influenced by the quantity and quality of links to a website. It can be used to track website and marketing performance, when used in conjunction with metrics like PA and Spam Score, also from MOZ; social shares; relevance; and other factors. It is used in guest blogging and in determining the value of advertising and marketing opportunities.
Because there is no 0 rating, a Domain Authority 1 is the lowest a site can have, and it most likely means that the ahrefs index hasn’t crawled your site yet, or hasn’t crawled any links from other sites TO your site.
Why Does DA Matter?
DA does not directly influence search rankings, so there are many that do not track or measure it. However, it is used in many facets of online business.
If you are buying or selling advertising, it is used as a metric to help determine the value of an advertising opportunity. It is used in sponsored posting for the same reasons, and we use it in guest blogging to help whittle out the sites with no, or little, value.
It can also be used to measure how effective your content marketing, guest blogging, or other link acquisitions techniques have proven.
Domain Authority 1
A Domain Authority 1 is given to new websites that have only just been crawled by ahrefs. It is also given to sites that have been crawled and indexed, but have to inbound links. Attract or build links to your site to improve your DA.
Although the ahrefs index updates approximately every 4 or 5 weeks, it can take longer than this for a new link to be crawled, indexed, and rewarded. Expect to wait around 2 or 3 months for a link that you develop today to be taken into account.
How To Increase Domain Authority
DA is primarily a measure of how many links you have pointing to your site, and the quality of those links.
Links are considered to be the most important factor when it comes to ranking a website in Google, and ahrefs uses machine learning to replicate these results. It stands to reason, therefore, that links should be the strongest determinant factor.
Build links. Ensure those links have a reasonable domain authority of themselves. And don’t forget to measure other metrics to ensure that you get genuine value from those links. In time, you will see your DA increase, and are likely to see your rankings in Google increase too.
